I teach first grade at a suburban school in the West San Fernando Valley. I have mixed ability children in my classroom, including gifted, students, students with identified learning disabilities, and students with special needs such as autism. I need to provide on an ongoing basis differentiated instruction as well as remediation. These materials will help to give all my students the opportunity to be successful at their level.
The students in my class love to act but it is very difficult to find short scripts geared to their reading abilities. These scripts are at their level so they will be successful at performing them for their other classmates.
Today, it is not only important that our students learn to decode but they also need to develop fluency along with expression in their reading. So many children focus so much energy on learning to decode and read that they do not develop a love of reading and learn that reading is fun. These Reader's Theater script will help my students to develop fluency while at the same time make reading fun. They will also help them to learn to use expression and voice intonations while reading. They will use these scripts in cooperative groups so they will not only be working on their reading skills but also their socialization skills of how to work together in a group. They will also teach students to speak and perform in front of other people.
Your generosity will make it possible for my students to practice fluency and at the same time learn to love reading and see that it can be fun which will help to turn them into lifelong readers.
