it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am starting my post-MSW career as a bilingual newcomer social worker at Elmhurst United, a middle school in East Oakland. Our program serves over 80 students who are new to the U.S., from all over the world. This year, I plan to support students and their families through case management, therapy groups, mindful outdoor time, and classroom supports. I'm so excited to get to know these students, but as a newer school social worker, I haven't built out a complete collection of resources yet.
Students do better when they have full bellies, opportunities to creatively express themselves (sometimes across language barriers), and outlets for anxious energy.
These resources will help accomplish that. I've chosen some snacks I know will be big hits and others to keep them full, a sand tray kit that will help them process their experiences nonverbally, and magnetic putty (supplementing my existing fidget collection) to channel anxiety for students opening up. I also included some menstrual products to have on hand for students who need them.
Because there is no budget to support teachers with supplies this year, I've dedicated some personal finances to outfit my space already, but I could use some help making it through the final push. Thank you for considering giving!
