Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a speech-language pathologist in an elementary school, COVID-19 greatly impacted the communication and the communication needs of the students that I see.

After the last few years, I would love to be able to provide my students with exciting books and materials, including games and activities, that are engaging, motivating and will increase achievement through the growth of their communication skills.

I started to develop a library with theme-related books that allow my students to learn more about specific themes including ocean animals, space, sports, and holidays. I would like to increase my library as many of my students have theme-related vocabulary goals and new books would allow me to meet their communication needs.

I would also like to add to my "library of fun" that my students can choose from once they "earn their game day." Students who come to speech will earn game days after following the school rules - be responsible, be respectful, be safe and be a scholar, during multiple speech sessions. We will get to celebrate their achievements in their speech/language sessions with a game or an activity (like Pop Up Pirates or LEGO kits). The games and activities will not only allow us to celebrate their hard work but also allow for practice of their speech/language skills in a less structured environment, encouraging additional growth on their IEP goals.

These resources would be used during speech/language therapy sessions. They will be engaging and motivating for my students, who range from preschool to 5th grade. Having activities that are exciting and new increases the opportunities for communication growth, which helps speech/language impaired students grow both academically as well as emotionally.
