Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.
My school is a Title I school.
My students come from a variety of ethnic and low socio-economic backgrounds. We have a high ELL population.
Last year, unfortunately, our school was labeled as a "failing school" due to low state test scores. Our district has also been affected by recent budget cuts. Despite the challenges our students face, our students, parents, and staff work together to give them the best possible education they deserve.
My Project
This year our curriculum will not include textbooks. The students will be working exclusively in a center-oriented classroom. These centers will include opportunities for students to read to themselves or to an other student. Your donation will help provide the books necessary for the students to use.
The books will enable the students to read books that are on their level.
They will also be exposed to books that will challenge them to increase their knowledge of words and to increase their fluency. The students will be able to set reading goals for the year and be excited when reaching them.
