Help Me Learn to Read

Help me give my students hands on opportunities to apply their knowledge of phonic & phonemic awareness skills and then showcase their new learning as they are able to read new books from Hooked on Phonics.

My Students

Try to remember your very first day of first grade. You were scared, anxious as you look around at all the other students, and stressed out as you realize school is ALL day - no more half day kindergarten. That is what my cute first graders experience IN ADDITION to the fact that they are learning in a 100% online, virtual classroom environment. This requires these darling six and seven year old children to sit and listen intently and REMOTELY as they try to learn the essential phonics skills required to read. The level of concentration required of my learners is incredibly high. In order to increase their concentration, I need to be sure these students are highly engaged. Providing engaging curriculum and hands on activities will lead to improved overall engagement and participation which will give my students the best opportunity for success!

My Project

My first grade students have the unique challenge and fortune of attending school 100% virtually. As such, they need (and deserve!) the most engaging and successful instruction to help them succeed in their online classroom environment. These hands on manipulatives will help teach these students in a memorable way. Having the opportunity to manipulate sounds represented in words will help them be efficient and successful readers. Transferring this knowledge into the actual reading of books will be highly motivational and rewarding for my students. These materials will make a huge difference to not only this group of learners - but all future learners as our children really are the future of education!
