This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"What new vocabulary word are we learning today?" the students ask me on a daily basis.
My students are English Language Learners who are enthusiastic about learning new vocabulary words.
Our school is located in a high poverty area and most students have parents that don't speak English. At home, my students don't get the language needed to help them succeed so the only exposure they have to learning new vocabulary is at school. My students are inquisitive about the variety of topics that we learn on a daily basis. Their enthusiasm in learning new words is evident. When we learn new vocabulary words, they make every effort to use them when speaking and in their writing. By providing them the learning centers they will have access to learning and practicing new vocabulary in a fun and entertaining way.
My Project
The learning centers will be used during center time. During center time, the students work independently on different reading and writing activities where they are engaged and learning a variety of skills. Unfortunately, games that increase vocabulary words are very limited in my class. By receiving these games, my students will have access to a variety of games where they will be able to practice new vocabulary words.
With the learning centers, the students will expand their English vocabulary.
They will be able to sharpen their skills in multiple meaning words, prefixes and suffixes, verb tenses, and use of context clues. This is turn will help them become stronger speakers, readers, and writers.
