My students need literacy centers, such as comprehension cards, match-up activities and a pocket chart, that allow them to physically manipulate objects while learning.

My Students

Perseverance means to push past any obstacle that comes your way. However, every person has to commit to varying levels of perseverance. My students have to conjure up more perseverance than I ever have in my life! They are 2-6 grade levels behind and don't have support at home.

They live in the inner city and have a hard time learning because of bad learning environments for the last six years.

Not only are they playing catch-up, they are also dealing with the fact that they learn differently. I have realized that my students need to be able to move things in order to cement their learning. They are so committed to being successful; however, they are all hitting a similar ceiling. The ceiling of how their brain needs to process information. It is not their fault their brain was conditioned this way, but they are still coming to school everyday in spite of this, demonstrating perseverance.

My Project

If you will, be a part of my demolition crew! We are working to tear down this ceiling and free these students from this obstacle. One way to do this is to aid me in acquiring these activities for my students. All of the activities include some type of kinesthetic movement while the students are working. This is crucial to helping my students learn by giving them activities that operate on the same system as their brain. When I asked my students at the beginning of the year what they do when they read, sadly, many of them said nothing! I was appalled and driven with determination to build their reading comprehension. However, I ran into an obstacle when I realized that I do not have enough members in my demolition crew to tear down this ceiling.
