This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school are part of a largely migrant, Hispanic, agricultural community and receive free or reduced lunch.
Unfortunately, many of our students do not have the means to gather even the most basic school supplies.
Most of my math students make up the bottom 25% of students in math. Most of these students have math skills that are 2 grade levels below their current grade level, and the majority of them come from non-English speaking households. Math is a subject where it is essential to have the necessary supplies and tools in order to fill in missing gaps in learning, as well as moving forward with grade level curriculum.
My Project
It is essential to have supplies readily available for my lower income students will put them on a level playing field with their peers who are not as economically disadvantaged.
It is essential that students have equal access to the needed materials in order to complete class and group projects.
Markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, and even just pencils are supplies that many of our students cannot afford. These are supplies that we use on a daily basis in my math classroom for group projects and our interactive student notebooks.
My goal as an educator is to make sure that students have the tools available to them that will help them be successful at school, regardless of what the circumstances at home happen to be.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
