Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title I charter high school in the unincorporated community of Lennox, CA -- right by Los Angeles International Airport. Our 620+ students, the great majority of whom are Latinx students from immigrant families, the great majority (98% of whom) come from low-income households, the great majority of whom will be the first in their families to attend college, are wonderful, bright, compassionate young scholars.
In particular, I am the faculty advisor for the student-run Stonewall Alliance, a club meant to spread awareness, support advocacy, and build community among LGBTQ+ students and their allies.
Our club is young, but though we have much work left to do, the impact its presence has had on the school community thus far has been astounding. After just two years, students and staff alike have noticed a dramatic shift in how welcoming and accepting our students are of the LGBTQ+ community.
My Project
Though I mentioned we have made a lot of progress in the last two years since our Stonewall Alliance has been on campus, we still have a lot of work to do. I have had students approach me 1:1, questioning their identities and afraid to be open about those questions for fear of discrimination from their peers, families, an/or community.
I feel an urgent need to further develop my capacity to support my students, both as individuals who may be struggling with big, beautiful, identity-based questions, as well as as a collective school community that has important work to do in taking care of all of its members.
I want to attend this conference to develop my toolkit, gain resources, and build relationships with other educators around the country who are doing similar work with similar urgency.
