Thank you for checking out my project! My kindergarten students are all very excited to be in school and love learning. One of my biggest goals this year is to help my students learn to read, while making sure they love coming to school and want to pick up a book and read!
My students have come into kindergarten with a vast array of backgrounds and reading readiness.
Some students are already reading independently, while others only know a few letter names. Some have complete control over their bodies, while others struggle to remain seated for more than thirty seconds. I try to incorporate movement into our school day as much as possible, and students are rarely in the same place for more than fifteen minutes.
Every day my students have center time, where they work on independent tasks and academic games while I have the opportunity to pull small groups for guided reading and direct instruction. My kindergarteners LOVE center time, and beg for it throughout the day. Reading is such an important kindergarten skill and reading lessons must be tailored to reach individual students at their level. One of the ways I ensure I reach my students at their level is by having small groups of students for guided reading lessons.
My Project
Right now, small group instruction in my classroom takes places at a small round table. This table is not big enough for more than two students and myself to work at, so if I have a larger group, we have to move to the carpet or to a rectangle table. This is makes it challenging for students to focus as the other students who are playing literacy games are in full view. It also means there is no dedicated area for small group instruction which makes following a routine impossible, and we all know young kids thrive on routine! A small group table would allow me to quickly pull small groups and be in front of the children I am working with. It would also help me to see the children working in their centers. It would give my class a dedicated area for guided reading, and allow me to easily reach over to assist students I am working with.
Small group instruction is an extremely important part of the kindergarten day.
With students on such different levels when it comes to reading skills, small group instruction is vital for pushing students to build upon the reading skills they have mastered. A small group table will enhance my ability to provide individualized instruction and keep students engaged in their work. Donations from people like you are tremendously beneficial and I, along with my students, thank you for your help!
