Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher. I work in a public school in the Bronx. I am going on my sixth year teaching and have been able to overcome many obstacles. This past year I taught a third grade class and really focused on making them "writers".
I wanted my students to become immersed in the writer's craft. One thing that I found difficult was using model writing to demonstrate to students different writing techniques.
There were a few times that I was able to use the overhead projector and transparencies, where I printed model writing and students' writing to conduct a mini-lesson. I could not believe the response that I received from the children. I found that they were focused and many of the students used the techniques presented in their own writing. The students also marveled over some of their peers' work, that I used to demonstrated model writing. They were amazed to see the work on the overhead.
Most importantly, the student that got to see their work on the overhead, became stars for the day. I could not believe how motivating that was.
Unfortunately, not every child got the chance to see their writing. The transparency film is expensive and I was not able to continue this method. This year I would really like to have the opportunity to do this. This will definitely enhance the writing workshop in my class. The transparency film that I need would be for an inkjet printer.
