This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love that my twenty-one 3rd grade students are resilient. They are incredibly diverse in many ways such as their cultural backgrounds, lived experiences, and hopes and aspirations for the future. What is joyspiration? In simple terms joy + inspiration, two feelings that I believe and research supports are pivotal to academic achievement and personal development.
My hope is that through this project, I can elevate the work I'm currently doing to instill a love for learning and documenting growth and developing an appreciation for celebrating our mess-ups, addressing and outing the doubts and being purposeful in infiltrating our days together with joyspiration.
At the beginning of the school year, 70% of students in my class reported "disliking school". What I discovered is that they really dislike "feelings of failure" so we've been working to shift that mindset by encouraging them to celebrate everything they do. We share newsletters, picture collages, and videos recaps with their parents, school administrators and school community members documenting everything from group work, PBIS activities, SEL drawings, projects & presentations, to just socializing and playing with peers at recess and we currently do it with my personal iphone.
If this project is successfully funded, I will be implementing a new Joyspiration initiative called "Photographer of the Day". With the spinner, I will add the names of students who are present for breakfast (which will aid in better attendance) and they'll get to win the privilege of being "Photographer of the Day". With the camera, they will take pictures of what they decide should be highlighted as joyful and inspiring the next day on the gallery wall (magnetic easel) and shared with stakeholders on ParentSquare.
