My Students
I work in a special education school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC. We have children in our classrooms with various disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, and language delays. The majority of our students come from low income/high poverty neighborhoods and single-caregiver families.
Our school provides its students with small special education classes and extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention, so that they can reach their highest potential, as typical learning environments can be too challenging for them.
Our students need specialized instruction with adaptations and repetition to master even basic skills. It's important for our students to have authentic learning experiences with real life experiences.
My Project
I am an occupational therapist working in a special education, public school, in Brooklyn. School occupational therapy works to help students access their school environment in the classroom, learning, recess, bathroom, lunchtime, gym, recess, and moving around the school!
Think back to when you had to sit at a desk and learn as a child or even an adult, and how difficult it could be sometimes.
Add a disability that affects your attention and ability to regulate your emotions, and learning becomes pretty much impossible.
Creating a sensory break tool kit for each classroom will help support our students and provide strategies to learn to calm their bodies and emotions, as well as learn strategies to stay focused and ready to learn.
We have some specialized equipment in our therapy room, but our students need equipment directly in the classroom that they can access during learning that will meet their sensory needs. The goal of this project is to begin to create sensory tool kits that teachers and students can use in the classroom to support self regulation. Having these items directly in the classroom will help support students to learn to take breaks, regulate their bodies and emotions, and stay calm and focused.
