We are a high-need group of special education students in a junior high school that need help communicating
80% of my students have difficulty communicating with their friends and family. Typical communication devices can cost thousands of dollars and can be bulky and difficult to use. My students want to communicate, and they want to have friends. They just need some technology to help them with this.
I was recently at a conference and saw how to use an ipod as a communication device. I immediately thought of some of my students and realized they could use this device as their "voice" in everyday life. Because of the physical difficulties some of my students experience they would struggle to use the correct buttons on a typical Ipod but an Ipod Touch they could successfully use.
We can put icons and sound into this device so that the students can use it to communicate with other people. The great thing about using an ipod to communicate is they are easy to use, small enough to carry around, plus they look like something a normal teenager would carry around.
Your help will make it possible for my students to have real conversations with their friends. They will be able to express their wants and desires. They could use the ipod to communicate with their parents and tell their parents what they did at school that day.
