My Students

Do you remember the first time you were transported to another time or another place as you read a great book? This year I will give my students that experience again and again. This project will impact three classes of students. I am one of two reading teachers in fifth grade at my school.

Listen, there is nothing that ignites a love for reading in a child's heart like providing them with the right book.

In some ways, I'm a pretty traditional teacher, but in this way I am very unique...I won't quit until I find a book that blows the top off a kid's head. Yes, I am that tenacious teacher. Here's my belief...when a child discovers the "right" book it takes over their life and leaves them hungry to experience that alternative universe again and again and again. This is how a life-long reader is created.

With my help, each and every one of my students will discover "that" book. One of the keys to creating a reading culture is reading together. Rather than dry "reading textbooks" we will read authentic literature. I have BIG dreams for my students. Help me make those dreams come true.

My Project

Come in my classroom. Every child has a book...the same book...in their hands and I am standing on a chair reading in character (and loudly) at a particularly dramatic part of the story. I am speaking in dialect to take the part of the main character in the story. The room is silent except for the sound of my voice. The children are transfixed.

Reading the right book (A Land Remembered and A Long Walk to Water) has the capacity to open the door of a child's mind to a new understanding of life.

My students, in some ways, live very narrow and sheltered lives. I'm seeking to push them outside their day-to-day experience and give them a glimpse of a world they have never seen before.
