As a librarian, I'm all about book choice and book joy. But now that I am working with more students with special needs, I need to up my game and get current on the science of reading -- phonics, decoding, sight words and vowel work. There is so much I don't know; I am humbled. After 15 years of working with gifted high school students, it's a big jump for me to start supporting readers in a high-needs school in Harlem where half the students receive special education services. This new job is my favorite ever, and I want to rise to the challenge.
This project will improve my Reading Buddies program.
Reading Buddies aims to boost literacy and confidence in students who are reading below grade level, struggle academically and/or are chronically late or absent to school because they lack support at home and/or don’t feel motivated to come on their own. Reading Buddies gives kids that motivation and inspiration to get to school on time because the PreK kids are depending on them! When older kids feel like leaders and role models, their attendance and reading scores improve, not to mention their love of literature and self-confidence.
