Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You have to know where you are in order to get where you are going. This quote encompasses the challenge that my students face daily at our school. We need an assessment system that accurately tells both me and the students their individual reading level.
My DC public school students are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade and attend a Title I school.
Despite the challenges they face at home and in their neighborhood they have high standards for their education and really love working hard (even though they won't admit it). The majority of my students are Latino and African American and are striving to over come the achievement gap that has persisted for years in DCPS. My students thrive when they are given a goal and are able to chart their progress towards that goal. Unfortunately, many of my students are reading well below grade level (sometimes even 5 years below). Having an assessment system that gives them a clear snapshot of where they are performing and where they need to go is the most important tool in closing this achievement gap.
My Project
With the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System we are able to diagnose each student's reading level (comprehension and fluency), inform them of their equivalent grade level, and chart their progress towards their goals. The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark System allows the students to see where they are and where they need to be. It is an assessment system that paints a clear and accurate picture of what students strengths and weaknesses are. Having this system allows me to ensure that each student is reading a book on their Just Right level. Without having this system students could be losing out on precious reading time by selecting a book that is too difficult or too easy. With this system in place students will be able to internalize their reading level and strive to reach their individual and class goals. This Assessment system will allow my students to reach their goal of being the highest achieving middle school students in the District of Columbia.
If you donate to this project you will be granting hundreds of students the opportunity to take a clear look at their reading- where they are- and set a goal for where they want to be.
This Assessment system will allow students to chart their progress over the year and have that feeling of accomplishment at the close of the year. When I have used the F and P Assessment System in the past I have seen incredible student reading growth! Give my students the chance to improve their reading levels!
