Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music has the power to inspire, to uplift and to change lives. My students CRAVE music and musical experiences, but do not have the opportunity to be be exposed to many LIVE performances, if any in their homes. My classroom is not equip with ANY educational DVDs, that would allow that exposure.
I have the honor of teaching K-5 Music at an Elementary in Nevada for almost 1000 students.
Almost all of my students live below poverty level and receive free breakfast and lunch daily. My schools ethnicity is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian (White) and 1% Asian. Close to 70% of these students are learning English as a second language. Music is such a strong outlet for them, but because of their financial situations they are unable to be exposed to any LIVE musical performances. Most of them have a radio or can listen to music while in their parents car, but being able to see a LIVE performance is something most of them will never experience. Our school cannot afford to take field trips for me to expose them to a REAL LIVE show, but I think seeing a LIVE recorded performance is the next best thing. I can bring in pictures and Cd's for them to listen to, but seeing a picture or listening to a song is nice, but seeing a real LIVE performance is believing!
My Project
My goal for every student is to expose them to ALL genres of music, including the most current artists. In order to accommodate this goal, I have to rent or borrow DVDs that I can use in class. I don't mind, but would LOVE to have any musical, symphony orchestra, marching band, or musical documentary at my students finger tips! Being able to WATCH the Beatles perform on screen is so much more inspiring to a child than just hearing their songs and seeing a picture. So much about Arts Education is visual stimulation and creativity. How can I ask my students to create and perform concerts if I have never exposed them to a concert.
We learn a lot about musical instruments in elementary music and I let them hear MANY musical performances of every type of instrument and bring in pictures of all of the instruments for them to see. But how inspiring for them to see a legend like Miles Davis play the trumpet or a symphony orchestra play Bach or Beethoven or watch The Sound of Music on screen.
My classroom is place where dreams can come true, where students get to see STARS and start to see themselves as STARS.
The possibilities are truly endless! It would not only take their music class, but their entire learning experience to another level. Please help me make it possible for each student to continue being motivated, inspired and passionate about how music can help them achieve their dreams.
