My Students

Reading has always been a favorite hobby of mine, and that is why I was so excited to teach English Language Arts. I am in my second year of teaching, and my passion is to instill a love of reading into my students! I tell my students every day that reading a book can take them on a journey!

I teach fifth grade English Language Arts at a Title I elementary school in South Carolina.

I have 61 students this year, and a lot of them tell me they don't like to read. My response is, "That's because you haven't found the right book yet!" Every child can learn to love reading. We just have to help them find things they are interested in. That is why I am so excited to introduce Elizabeth Raum's series to my kids! I think that it will open my students' minds to reading.

My Project

Elizabeth Raum's series, "An Interactive History Adventure: You Choose", is a great way to grab my students' attention. In these books, the students have choice in what they read. There are different paths that students can choose to take, so they are getting different perspectives as they read and share their stories with their peers. I am asking for the WWII set because after Christmas, my students learn about this topic in their Social Studies classes. As a reading teacher, I always try to align my novels with Science and Social Studies when possible as a reinforcement tool for students. All of the stories in Baum's Interactive History Adventures are true, so students are learning great information in a fun and interesting way!

A book with options gives my students the ability to decide something for themselves.

Research has shown that if a child chooses something for themselves, they are more likely to understand the material and want to learn. This book will show my students that reading can be fun!
