My Project
I am an Audhd Occupational Therapist and I work with Autistic, ADHDers, and other Nuerodivergent students in a NYC Public Middle School in Brooklyn. We continue to need sensory supports to help provide a supportive and sensory-friendly space. I want to have all spaces in the school (not just the OT and break areas) to have materials and tools to support sensory and executive function needs.
Middle school is already a super hard time for so many students as they adapt to changes in both school and their bodies and emotions!
Self regulation and sensory tools can help provide tools and supports for students to begin to learn how to regulate their sensory systems throughout the school day.
Wobble stools can help provide calming movement input to help with focus and regulation in the classroom, whilst tennis balls on the bottom of chairs can reduce auditory input which can be overwhelming for many students.
Quiet fidgets can help with calming and regulation in a discrete way for students.
By having sensory supports readily available in the classrooms we can help support them with developing self-regulation skills. These tools don't just benefit our neurodivergent students but all students in the classroom.
