My Students
My students struggle with reading, and finding books they actually want to read can be even more challenging! Yesterday I asked the class to brainstorm a list of books they would love to see in our classroom library. I told them about DonorsChoose.org and we generated the list of books below.
I work with 7th grade students from Boston who struggle with literacy.
Reading and writing is challenging for them. Because many of them are reading below grade level, finding high-interest books that they want to read is difficult. When they do find a book they like, they actually find themselves asking for more independent reading time. They love talking about their books and recommending books to other students. Providing my students with books they actually want to read is critical to promoting literacy in my classroom.
My Project
Independent reading is critical to promoting literacy and comprehension, which are essential skills across all content areas. Instead of telling my students what books to read, my goal is to give them access to all different types of books that have been ordered based on their specific interest areas. Instead of generating a list of fiction books, I decided to ask them what types of nonfiction books they would be interested in reading. I challenged them to think of people, certain periods of history, or science topics that they would like to know more about. I can only imagine the look on their faces when they see the actual specific books they requested placed in front of them!
Most adults know what it is like to read a good book.
You become engrossed in a story and you can't wait to turn the page! I want to share the joy of reading with my students, and by providing them with books they want to read will help me accomplish my goal and my students improve their literacy skills. Thank you for your support!
