My Students
A day in my 6th grade language arts class, you might find students doing a rap battle to learn Latin Roots or creating a snapshot tableau that captures the theme of a challenging poem. You might find us sharing our favorite books aloud or creating the graphic novel version of our class text.
My students are energetic, intelligent and thirsty for knowledge.
They moan when it's time to stop reading our class novel, they cheer when they get a chance to write poetry. Our school is extremely diverse with kids from all different cultures, races, religions, SES, and families. We have a community garden, an award winning chess team and an active GSA. Our students are driven by social justice and inquiry. They are hungry to learn more and find new ways to contribute to their community and world.
My Project
With a Chromebook laptop station in my classroom, students will be able to learn and utilize digital literacies in language arts. They will be able to create book review podcasts and book trailers. Striving readers will be able to listen to audio versions of our class novel to aid in comprehension. Students will be able to write, revise, publish and collaborate on their work using Google Drive and various other blogging sites. They will learn to prepare presentations for their peers and polish their typing skills. They will gain the technological skills necessary to succeed and flourish in their future academic and work lives.
Don't get me wrong: our school has a computer lab.
However, the computer lab is shared among students K-8 and is often unavailable due to copious amounts of testing. With access to laptops available to my students on a daily basis, they would have the incredible opportunity to create, collaborate, listen, research, record, design, watch, contribute and ultimately learn in a way that is meaningful and relevant to their present and future lives.
