This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so fortunate to teach in a school that is entirely composed of recently immigrated students from around the world. As a teacher of U.S. government and economics, I hope to empower my students to take part in the U.S. democracy and the economy.

My students are wonderful teenagers from over 30 countries around the world, and they are all new to America and to the English language.

They come from China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tibet, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Ukraine, Mauritania, and many other countries. And the beautiful thing about our school is that all of these students learn to collaborate in class and build their English skills and their content knowledge together. It is a community of caring, respect, and generosity and I feel very lucky to be a part of it. Many of my students are from families that have very recently arrived in America, and as such, they are just getting on their feet economically. Many of these families chose to come to the U.S. in order to give their children educational and professional opportunities not available in their native lands. I want to provide my students with the very best materials and educational activities that I can possibly offer.

My Project

Many of the resources I am requesting will be on permanent display in my classroom: world, U.S., and New York State maps, to help my ESL students have a tangible sense of the geographic locations we discuss in class. Also, my room is lovely, but I have no fixed, wall-mounted board for writing down my notes for them. English Language Learners (all of my students are new to English) really need to SEE the words they are hearing. I also like to draw illustrations of concepts I'm teaching, like the three branches of government. A large, fixed whiteboard will help me and my students tremendously!

My students are all such special people.

Leaving your home country and your native language behind and moving to a new world as a teenager--as all of them have--is very challenging. I am so lucky to get to teach them--and learn from them--and your donations will help me out immensely in that. I'm so grateful for your help.
