My Students
I believe in reading! If you visit my classroom, you'll see it's filled with print. There are books and Kindles everywhere, and students are reading, and they're loving it. They read every day)
Next year, with your help, I'd like to take the next step: Let's make my classroom into a news hub!
Like all young people, my students are curious about their world. They tell me about current events and ask me for my thoughts. But they get their news mostly from TV or their phones. And much of it comes from TMZ, Gawker, and Buzzfeed. Now, I'm no news snob, but I'd love to see my students read reliable news sources instead of celebrity gossip sites.
My Project
What better place to start than The New York Times Upfront? Upfront is a great way to offer my students access to the rich reporting of The New York Times. The articles come from the full newspaper and are adapted to meet my students' reading level. Plus, it's so much cheaper than buying a daily subscription!
My hope is to bombard my students with more and more opportunities to read. I want to convince every single one of them that there's a big world out there, that it's beautiful (and complicated), and that reading will get them faster to that world.
