This year, I will be teaching in a diverse public magnet school with the inaugural class at our middle school located in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. My students are coming from a variety of backgrounds and areas around the city of Philadelphia. They are curious, motivated, and voracious readers.
The SLAB is a second campus of The SLA , an inquiry-driven, project-based public school focused on 21st century learning.
The SLAB opened its doors on September 9, 2013 as a high school and will welcome the first class of fifth graders in September 2018.
At our school, we focus on five core values: inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. All of our units in every class culminate in a final, student-driven project and we strive to make to make our lessons and projects as real-world as possible.
My Project
Abibliophobia: (n) the fear of running out of reading materials!
Having access to a variety of interesting books will allow my students to become stronger readers.
Recent studies on literacy confirm what educators have known for years: the more contact children have with books, the better readers they become.
Teachers can promote better reading performance by reading to children daily and by having them interact with books through the extensive use of classroom libraries.
I want to ensure that my classroom library is a literature rich classroom. The books I have chosen are diverse in interests levels and reading levels to appeal to all of my diverse readers.
"A book is a gift that you can open again and again."
