My Students
It is a challenge to make Math fun in the classroom! Some students find it frightening! Instead of just explaining a concept, I would like to introduce it visually. My kids would benefit greatly from having overhead manipulatives to use to model new concepts and work out problems together.
We are a small neighborhood Charter School.
We only have two classes per grade level for a total of 200 students. We pride ourselves on focusing on the individual student and offering exciting learning opportunities! We try to provide as many hands-on learning activities in Math as possible. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult to purchase supplies to do these type of activities with the budget cuts that our school has been faced with.
I do not have a class set of manipulatives for the students to use to learn with so they are having to work without concrete examples.
A set of overhead manipulatives could be used to help all of my learners achieve success. They need to be able to see what I am talking about. Currently, I have to draw a lot of samples and this takes up a lot of precious instruction time.
I am sure that by having the correct manipulatives for the students to view and manipulate it would increase how confidently they would grasp new concepts.
My Project
At this time our school does not have any Math overhead manipulatives and we have only a handful of student manipulatives.
My students, in addition to students in other classes, would benefit from receiving instruction with the manipulatives in order to provide hands-on experiences for them. I requested three sets of most items in order to ensure both classes are using the same items since we switch based on ability during Math. In addition, a third set was requested for our ESE teacher who also provides support for our students during Math. I think it is critical that all of my students get the exposure to the visual representations of concepts.
Overhead manipulatives for money, fractions, place value, rulers, tangrams, dice, numbers, shapes, and base ten blocks will greatly enhance my ability to get the Math concepts across to all types of learners.

The Math manipulatives are a much needed teaching tool and my students will gain a greater understanding of the concepts that I am teaching.
