Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Another drill? Another worksheet? Sometimes math can seem like there is nothing but memorizing to young students. The truth we all know is that we remember more when we're engaged. Games are filled with fun ways for my students to practice their math skills.

My students live within the second largest school district in the nation.

It is an urban school where 48% of students receive free or reduced lunches. My students are curious about the world around them. They explore novelty and take meticulous details about interesting experiences.

My Project

I am requesting two card games that students play with partners. These games are similar to other card games that students are already familiar with, so students can start using them immediately. The teach basic computation. The board games I am requesting emphasize higher math skills than basic computation. These games were selected because they require students to hold numbers in their head, building mental stamina. These are games that can be played in a group as opposed to the card games which are best played individually. The two reproducible books I selected are games that can be played individually, as partners, or as a group. Every student has times when they prefer to work independently. They emphasize a range of skills, from basic computation to elementary algebra.

There is an old saying, 'Where your heart is, there also is your treasure.' When students care about the work they are doing because it is fun, playful, and engaging they learn quicker and the lessons stay with them for much longer.

Thank you for taking the time to consider bring these math resources to my students.
