This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"That's what games are in the end. Teachers. Fun is just another word for learning," according to Ralph Koster in his Theory of Fun for Game Design. In my experience as a teacher, Koster is 100 percent correct.

My students are bright individuals, who are happy to be back at school in person, learning and socializing with friends.

They come from countries such as Ecuador and Egypt, ready to get their education and make their mark in the world.

However, many students lack basic necessities to help them succeed - things many of us take for granted, such as shelter, food, or clothing.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting a variety of games to be used with students in my English class. Students will use and play the games, creating their own variation of the games based on books we've read or characters we've encountered in our reading. For example, students will play Othello after we read Shakespeare's play, drawing connections between the game and the tragedy. Games like charades will be played during our study of Jane Eyre as an ice-breaker, to help students understand the significance of the game in the novel. The games will also be used to help with social-emotional learning on days when everyone seems out of sorts and needs a mental break.

Using games in the classroom is a way to add some fun to our lessons, while also helping students with some much-needed social-emotional learning.
