My Students
My students have a hunger for knowledge of the world they live in. I have never met a group of students so committed to understanding the world they live in by understanding where we have all come from- and questioning the narratives of history that they have been taught so far.
My students are an amazing group of middle scholars in Harlem, NY.
They are active members of both their school community, and the larger community. These students seek out opportunities to engage in their curricular materials outside the classroom, in their daily lives.
My school community is committed to creating scholars who are critical thinkers. In order to achieve this goal for all students, we as educators seek to develop curriculum that allows students to do more than just read from a textbook. We want our students to experience history by examining primary source documents. We want our students to read, see, and hear stories that reflect the various people who have been a part of history- not just the rulers and upper classes, but the working class and those groups that have been marginalized throughout history. We want our students to write history from a perspective that is meaningful for them.
My Project
With the CICERO: History Beyond the Textbook materials, students will begin analyzing history by examining primary source documents. They will take on the role of people living in different time periods and attempt to recreate life during that time in order to more fully understand what life would have been like at different times for different groups of people. These resources will allow me to differentiate my instruction to meet my students needs. Not only will students be able to read about history, but they can view it through looking at news reels, video footage, and art from particular time periods. Students would be able to engage in history in ways that suit not only their needs as learners, but also their strengths as scholars.
Your donations will significantly change the lives of my students.
They will be able to interact with history in ways that they have not been able to at this point in time. Opportunities for students to get out of the textbook that keeps their work individualized, and into a more interactive setting that will allow them to learn how to work with others as historians will change the way they perceive the world and help them better understand the various perspectives that their society holds.
