My Students
I teach science to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a Title I Public School in Brooklyn, New York. We are presently engaged in a variety of student-guided open-inquiry projects based upon field studies performed outside of the school building in various parks and similar locations both around their neighborhood and throughout the city. Seeing and interacting in these "other worlds" and has had a huge impact on how my students think about themselves, life, and the future of their planet.
My Project
My scholars and I participate in a lot of data gathering field studies in the neighborhood parks around our school. Our biggest involves a study with oysters in Coney Island Creek.
We use a lot of test kits to take measurements of environemntal factors such as nitrates, ammonia levels, pH, and dissolved oxygen.
Dissolved oxygen test kits are particularly expensive and they leave behind waste (both chemical reagents and the glass ampoules they are stored in).
In order to make our studies both more economically and environmentally sustainable, we are seeking to purchase a portable digital dissolved oxygen meter so we no longer need to purchase dissolved oxygen kit.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
