Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at our high school are part of a diverse learning community that has produced three academic national championships in the last 17 years. Our socio-economic status of our students is also very diverse. We have many students who come from low-income environments in addition to students from upper income schools. Frequently, all of our students are affected by the budget crunch in Sacramento and we are left in dire need of new novels and books.
At the end of our students' time at our school over 90% of our graduates go to four year schools.
My Project
In the last couple of years, schools across the country have been moving away from the traditional novel because of funding issues. The voracious readers at our school are always in need of fresh titles. These three titles have been added to our library over the last couple of years because of the generosity of the donors' choose community.
In the last couple of years I have heard many of our students say that Martian Chronicles, Slaughterhouse V, and Into the Wild are among their favorite books of all time.
In order to make these novels acceptable to our 11th grade American Literature readers we are going to need a few more.
