This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard-working and amazing. They come to school happy and ready to learn each day. They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone microscopes. Most of my students do not have the resources to support buying extras. Our school does not have the money to fund the number of microscopes needed to provided enough practice with so many students in our classroom.
My students are in desperate need of honing their research and inquiry skills.
They are motivated by inquiry driven lab lessons. They beg to do "real" science. Unfortunately, we currently only have 15 working microscopes to share between two classrooms. The age of many of the microscopes makes them difficult to focus.
My Project
We currently share our microscopes with another classroom. For 35 kids (70 if both classes require the microscopes) we have 15 microscopes. Some of our scopes are so old, its very difficult to focus in on the slides. We need more microscopes to lower the student to microscope ratio. My goal is to have a 2 student to 1 microscope ratio.
There is nothing more exciting in life science than looking into the microscope.
There is nothing more frustrating than waiting in a line of four students (or more!) for a chance to look into the microscope. Help give my students the chance to lower the student to microscope ratio, so more students can be inspired by science every day.
