This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like when you were first learning how to read? Over 90% of my students are not yet reading and literacy stations are an integral part of helping them to become readers. A listening center would quickly become a favorite station in my room of eager learners!
My students are highly motivated learners with a wide variety of cognitive needs.
We currently have 27 students in our kindergarten classroom, many of whom require learning modifications and a great deal of individual support. My students love learning through stories, especially those that are about animals.
Our school is located in a large inner city. The majority of the students receive free/reduced lunch. The neighborhood in which the school is located has an extremely high poverty rate and 48% of the children their do not complete high school. Our students have a lot to overcome, but their love for learning and natural curiosity is just the same as any other five year old. My students deserve to be given everything they need to lead a successful education career and close the achievement gap.
My Project
With a new listening center in the classroom my students will be able work independently and listen to high quality children's literature. Listening to books on tape allows students to hear and develop reading fluency. Also children are able to develop stronger reading comprehension by listening to books above their independent reading level. Children love being read to. Being read to is said to have as much benefit for them emotionally as it contributes to their language development. With the addition of a listening center to our classroom students will be able to listen favorite stories again and again, as well as explore new areas of interest through literature.
We know that all young children love having stories read to them and a listening center is just the place for that!
The listening center would be a place in our classroom devoted to providing children with a place to hear their favorite stories and explore areas of interest. Please help our students to continue their love for learning through literature by helping us get a classroom listening center!
