Block play is an important part of the Kindergarten day. Most of us remember the fun we had playing with blocks when we were in Kindergarten. What many people don't realize is that Kindergarteners aren't merely playing with their blocks; they are developing intellectually, physically, socially and creatively.
Block play helps children learn to describe sizes, shapes, and positions. They develop math skills by grouping, adding, subtracting and even multiplying with blocks. When playing with blocks, children build strength in their fingers and hands, and increase eye-hand coordination. They develop skills in design, representation, balance and stability. Socially, blocks help children to make friends and cooperate as they work together in small groups. Block play encourages children to build their own structures, and then become actors as they create mini-dramas inside their structures.
Please help me provide a block play center for my Kindergarteners. I am asking for hardwood block accessories in the form of boats, planes, community vehicles, garages, and signs. These wood block accessories will be shared by two classrooms. The students include both English and non-English speakers, as well as students with disabilities. My school, Germain St. Elementary school, is a multi-cultural, public school set in the San Fernando Valley. Because the materials are well made from hard wood, they will be used by hundreds of students in the years to come.
Having a block play center in my room will be a fun, effective way for my Kindergarteners to learn. Please help me acquire these wonderful materials for the children!
