Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have severe Autism and they have difficulty communicating with others. Most of my students are non-verbal and use a picture exchange communication system. My school cannot afford to help me make the materials needed for my students’ communication books.
I am a speech therapist working with elementary students with Autism who come from low-income families.
My school is located in a very high need urban area. We are provided with minimal materials and our school does not have the funds it needs to provide our students with the necessary materials for learning.
My Project
Kids with Autism have difficulty communicating with others. A primary way for kids with Autism to communicate is a communication book. These books are filled with pictures used to request items, answer questions, make comments, and to interact socially with others. They can build their expressive language skills by formulating picture sentences which will give them the opportunity to communicate their wants and needs with others. My students are very successful using these communication books. They need these visual materials to help them learn and understand new information to make them more independent in the community. Having a computer and printer would allow me to make new materials and pictures for each of my students to improve their communication skills.
My students are really successful when provided adaptive materials and given opportunities to practice expressing themselves in a variety of settings.
Having access to make new materials will provide my students with the tools necessary to communicate with others and be successful in the community.
