This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our band program consists of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. We have three levels in our program: Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, and Advanced Band. Our intermediate and advanced students also have the option of joining our Jazz Band. I feel very privileged to be able to teach some students for all three years of middle school. With that said, my favorite part of being a band director is probably starting our beginners.
There is nothing better then seeing a student learn how to play an instrument for the first time.
It is such a blessing to see them progress from knowing absolutely nothing about music to becoming a young musician. I always look forward to seeing the excitement in their eyes when they put the instrument together for the first time.
At the beginning of the year, I always tell them that it is not going to be easy to learn how to play an instrument. I explain that there will be times when they will want to give up, but, if they put in the work, nothing will feel better than that first performance. What a blessing it is to be a part of their musical journey!
My Project
This year more than ever, we will be in need of supplies for our young musicians. Many of our parents are out of work or have not had a consistent paycheck because of the pandemic. Understandably, music will not be a priority for some of our students' parents as they are trying to keep the lights on and food on the table. It would break my heart to deny any student the chance to learn an instrument because of financial need.
My goal is to provide every child who has a passion for music the opportunity to be in our program.
With your donation, we will be able to help not only students this year but students in our band program for years to come. No child should have to miss out on a music education that could one day pay for their college.
