My students need these back-to-school materials to help us start the school year off right! Notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, reading materials- PLEASE HELP!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in our classroom consists of literacy time in the morning, which includes word study, story time and reading & writing workshop. After lunch we move on to Math & Social Studies and I often like to end the day giving the students opportunities for independent work.
The school is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the Chinatown area.
Our school serves a large population of emerging bilinguals. My students consist of an unique group of children with diverse needs as they emerge as Chinese-speaking bilinguals. They often speak a variety of dialects both at school and at home, while learning an additional language, English, outside of the home. These young children often serve as the main connection to the Chinese speaking parents and grandparents at home. Due to this, the children and their families take their roles in school very seriously and do their very best to ensure they excel in all areas of academics in school. I know what it was like to be from a large, low income family and struggle to obtain quality school supplies for the year. I am requesting these supplies in the hopes to ease the financial burden on the families I will serve this year. I want to be able to provide some of these very basic essentials for my students.
My Project
Budget cuts from the Department of Education often equates to the lack of essential supplies such as no paper, no crayons, pencils or scissors. Teacher resources will also aid my students in their language development because I used a few of the Evan Moor Daily Review books last year and my students liked the activities and they actually transferred the skills they learned doing these activities to other areas of their school work. I am confident that those teacher resources will improve the quality of their learning, particularly their language skills. The Scholastic & Time for Kids weekly readers provide the students with wonderful opportunities for interesting, non-fiction reading appropriate for their grade-level. With the writing journals, I hope to motivate the children into writing more by providing them with a "special place" to share their thoughts and stories. My ultimate goal is to use all these materials to create an exciting environment for the school year.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom significantly.
To a young child, there is often nothing more exciting than the very first day of school. I really want to start the school year off being able to provide my students and their families the supplies and resources they need. It will be a major benefit for my families because having these supplies will be less of a financial burden on them. It will also make my work easier because these are not supplies I have to buy on my own.
