Help Inspire Students to Love Social Studies

My students need texts about Social Studies, visual and literary materials that can enhance their understanding along with Social Studies related classroom decorations to brighten up our learning environment.

My Students

My new school is located in Washington DC and serves students with high socioeconomic needs. Students who attend my school bring with them their heritages from Ethiopia, Central America, along with other nationalities. The needs of my students are great and I see a lot of opportunity to bring academic resources into my school that will give students a more accessible, purposeful and engaging academic experience.

It is my hope this year, as a Social Studies teacher, to teach history as a dynamic STORY that includes the lived experiences of my students and in such a way that inspires them to make a difference.

My Project

My students need texts about Social Studies, as well as visual and literary materials that can enhance their understanding along with Social Studies related classroom decorations to brighten up our learning environment. These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because students will have the chance to become familiar with and analyze important primary sources along with reading texts that are both accessible and engaging. For example, the primary source text included in this order will give students the opportunity to understand multiple points of view about important events in American history. Furthermore, by decorating my classroom with important posters about geography and the ancient civilizations, students will have a visual reference for the time periods that we will learn about.

I hope to use all of these materials to create a classroom where students feel inspired to learn about history and to create a safe space for all learners.
