My Students

Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics to amazing motivated language learners in a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and future careers. The students in our school are about 70% ELL and speak about 20 different languages.

My students are refugees from many different countries and are working hard to learn how to listen, speak, read, and write in English.

This year, I have students from Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mexico, and Honduras. There are many different languages in my classroom and in several different cultures. For these students, life in our city is very different from their lives before coming here. We strive to be at all times respectful and appreciative of each others' culture and strengths. We believe that we all have gifts to share and that with the education we will have the power to do so.

My Project

The second semester of school always brings standardized testing. Our ELL (English Language Learning) students take computerized tests to determine their proficiency in Reading, Speaking, Listening, and Writing.

Not only will snacks feed their brains and give them energy, but will also serve as an incentive to do their best!

Testing can be difficult and sometimes tedious. We want students to "show what they know" and have learned that snacks can be a good motivator to work hard.

The snacks I have selected have lower amounts of sugar and many are made with nutritious whole grains. We want to help them learn to make appropriate choices when choosing snacks.
