My students need your help!
I will be teaching a second grade bilingual special education class during the 2008-2009 school year in a high-need community school in New York.
Donor, these children have speech and language issues that have affected their reading skills. English is their second language and they are having trouble adapting to it. The majority of these children are testing at beginning first grade levels in reading and Kindergarten levels in writing. They need help developing their phonemic awareness, English vocabulary, comprehension and fluency skills.
I am requesting the Literacy Center 2.0 from LeapFrog because it is made specifically for students such as mine. This program helps integrate technology with reading and makes learning to read fun for the students. I am also requesting these materials because they are made specifically for English Language Learners.
I borrowed a LeapPad from one of my coworkers and had one of the children work on it and was amazed at how quickly he adapted to it. After I assessed him, he was able to identify more letters and sounds than he was able to from daily drills.
Donor, these children would greatly benefit from fun activities that capture their interest while also allowing them to learn. By helping us out, you will make it possible for these children to break through the language barrier and strengthen their reading skills.
