Help Improve Functional Literacy Skills For Students With Special Needs

My Students

My students arrive with huge smiles, and an eagerness to learn. However, they need information presented in multiple formats, with repetition and an emphasis on generalization. Movement, sounds, and visual presentation are essential to their learning and success. Appropriate materials and learning opportunities are necessary to increase their access to employment opportunities, and an increased quality of life. Students range in age from 11-14, and have unique abilities ranging from Autism to profound disabilities. We are based in a rural area, with limited access to stores and cultural centers.

My Project

Literacy is vital for independence in adult life. The students in my class have to overcome a variety of challenges which hinders their ability to learn to read using standard reading approaches. As a military spouse, I have taught in several states. I have used the Card Master card reader with much success in all of my classrooms. I have a couple of students who would greatly benefit from this tool. I would like to acquire a Card Master card reader for my current class as a tool to help students increase their word recognition skills. The blank cards will enable me to present words using a variety of fonts to promote skill generalization.
