My Students
My students live in a small shore community that was impacted by Hurricane Sandy several years ago. Some houses in the community are still under repair . I teach in a low-income area where many of my families work hard to provide for their children and many of them are working more than one job, and still struggle maintain a household.
Part of my job is to make sure that students are happy and able to learn at school.
My hope is that all children are excited about entering the school each and everyday. I love seeing children engaged and safe in the classroom.
My Project
My name is Dana Florio, and I am a school counselor at the JCCES in Keansburg, NJ. Keansburg is a low-income area, where 24 percent of our students and their families live below the poverty level. Data shows that our district has a significant problem with chronic absenteeism. Our chronic absenteeism is twice the state average. My research shows, our families' inability to provide laundered clothing plays a part in our students' poor attendance.
Our student population would benefit from having a washer and dryer installed in our school building.
As I sit here typing this email, a third grade teacher, Mrs. Hummer, just peaked her head into my office to tell me that a student in her class revealed that she had not come to school the day before because she had no clean clothes. This is the reality for many of our students. Having a washing machine in our school building would enable our staff, students and maybe even our parents, to do laundry as needed. I strongly urge you to select our school to be awarded a washer. I believe this will boost our attendance rate and would be essential to increase the self-confidence of our students.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
