Help me give my students new headphones to use at our technology center and two hands-on math activities to use as independent activities, or in case the headphones stop working!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher for a special day program, I have an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of my students. We educate 11 students in a CORE autism program. Their grades span from TK-1st. We follow the same curriculum as our regular peers but also emphasize learning social skills, school routines and the hidden curriculum. We need many different ways to learn including technology, hands-on materials, and opportunities to move.
Despite our label of having autism, we choose to break stereotypes by creating a family of empathy and working as a team.
My students often have difficulty communicating their needs and staying focused. Our needs vary from educational, to social, sensory and developmental support. I am committed to help them make breakthroughs to continue their education and work alongside their general education peers.
My Project
Last semester, I witnessed some amazing moments of teamwork and learning at our technology center. Unfortunately, some of our headphones stopped working and some students bit through the cords of the headphones. Even though they were focused on their activity, they developmentally do not always have the self control to prevent themselves from mouthing objects.
Instead of focusing on the past, my responsibility is to find new avenues to continue to enrich their learning environment.
I am hopeful that these Lakeshore Headphones will withstand the excitement of learning, with thicker cords, and my students can get back to being engaged and excited about school. As teachers, we must always be prepared which is why I've also asked for independent learning activities to engage my students just in case the headphones stop working!
