My students need headphones to work on literacy. Audible, reading websites, test prep, and intervention technology all require to be able to hear.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what they will discover on their own for the day. I ask them, "What do you want to learn?" I want them to know that they are in charge of their learning and have the technology to find out and read about anything.
I teach in an urban low socio-economic area.
All of our students receive free lunch. My students are humble and eager to learn. They don't have much sometimes at home, but they would give you anything they have to offer. They love school and they love the safe environment the school provides for them.
Many of my students sign up for after-school programs, in which students are selected by lottery. Despite language barriers, financial status, a limited technology available at home and a highly populated school, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
My Project
My students do not bring headphones to school, or buy the dollar store earbuds, and some even use the disposable earphones off of an airline. Technology has proved to be a great resource in helping students with literacy, here's the problem because over half of my students are below the 50 percentile in reading, they can't use any technology effectively because they can't hear what is being read or told to them. Most of my students are so embarrassed that their parents couldn't afford any earphones or their earphones don't work, they will sit on a computer program with no progress and say nothing. Taking the financial responsibility away from students and providing them with quality earphones will open the door for students to succeed in literacy with a plethora of reading options.
Using technology such as audible stories, reading websites that have articles and books at students reading level, and intervention programs all geared toward literacy can help bring students to a 3rd-grade reading level if they can hear what is being read to them or directions.
My students will feel confident to take charge of their own learning during center choices. They will be exposed to literature and nonfiction that is above their reading level but not above their understanding. They will be built into lifelong readers by building a love for reading because they can hear it on today's technology.
