My students need this dissolved oxygen probe to gather data critical for water quality testing. They also need various shades of copy paper to create presentation boards.
My students have begun to learn that there is a really cool world out there to explore and they want the materials to do it! We have purchased a Lab Quest to do just that but need the probes to gather data with. You can help to answer the question: is there enough oxygen to breathe?
These are inner city kids who have not had science this past year because no one was there to teach it.
I worked with them during lunch, after school and even on the weekends so they could begin to learn how to be citizen scientists and gather data useful to NASA and local scientists who are working on environmental issues. Except for the students and some of we teachers, everything is rather ancient and long since lost its usefulness. This request will help us to get started and begin to level the playing field. They have a chance to participate in the science fair and I want them to do well. There is no reason they can't achieve once we have materials to work with. They are hungry children, not only for food, but for knowledge, and I want to help fill them up!
My Project
With a dissolved oxygen probe, students gather data from water which helps to determine how much oxygen is inside the water and use that to tell if the water is healthy for aquatic life. This water can be bottled, tap, river, lake, anything! We intend to use it for just that: any water we can find. It can also determine how much oxygen is in the air. We are going to explore all these opportunities and develop inquiry and science research projects involving this data. The best part is that this probe can be used for many years and does not need replacing every few tests, like chemical ones do. The paper will help to create presentation fair boards, journals, and log books for each student. These are required for science fairs and your donation will help them achieve this goal.
Your donation will make a dream become a reality for these students.
The students do not have materials to work with, I don't even have a desk! I can only imagine what their faces will look like when we actually get to do something besides talk. They will actually get to gather real data and upload it to GLOBE and NASA. Doing citizen science, working with scientists that can inspire them to seek careers in these fields, and who knows? One of these students might find a cure for a cancer.
