Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a high school social studies teacher in an inner-city Houston school. Many of our students have been hit by the devastation as a result of Hurricane Harvey. In addition, I am working in a brand-new program at our school designed to help those students who have fallen 2-3 years behind to get back on track in order to graduate with their class. Many of the students we serve in our program, Project Beyond Belief, fare additional struggles because they are teen parents, living in a non-traditional family situation, and are often the breadwinners for their families. These kids have not been successful in the traditional school setting. We at CHS sought to remedy this situation by creating a non-traditional program that will ensure student success! These students rotate between 4 core area teachers (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) in order to receive face-to-face instruction as well as support for online credit recovery courses during the day as well as instruction from a graduation coach. Additionally, the program focuses on social skills and emotional well-being. Other staff within our program are two dropout prevention specialists, social workers, and counselors.
My Project
The students in our program are 2-3 years behind academically. Additionally, many of them have issues when it comes to keeping up with their belongings, especially their school materials. The school-issued laptops are especially troublesome for the majority of them. All too often they leave their laptops laying around, providing less than honest students ample opportunity to snatch up the wrong laptop. In the fall semester we had a rash of lost, stolen, and misplaced laptops in our program. This semester our school district rolled out new devices for our students. We want to help them keep up with their laptops by providing them with an identification tag/luggage tag for their case. This will help students to identify their own laptop because the name will be visible on the luggage tag. Our students need much tender loving care, and if we can help them and provide them with a simple luggage tag to help identify their computer and keep it from being lost, stolen, or misplaced, we feel as if we have tackled one of the small problems to prevent them from impeding their own success.
