My Students

My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take my my Advanced Placement Statistics course Microeconomics course. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.

These students realize that education is their key to a better life.

They are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

These materials have proven to be extremely helpful in prior years. Throughout the years that I've taught this AP course, I've tried out a variety of review/reference materials. Each time, I monitored student progress and solicited student feedback on each resource. These two resources have come in as the most effective materials to assist students in preparing for the AP exam.

This course follows a challenging and rigorous college scope and sequence for a microeconomics course; each year, I undertake a funding request such as this to provide each student with their own review and reference materials to help them be better prepared for the high-stakes AP assessment in May.

The score a student earns on the AP exam determines whether or not they are eligible for college credit; therefore, solid performance on the exam is of utmost importance. My students are all low-income and desperately seek to reduce their college expenses by earning credit for this course. Beyond that, learning how to properly prepare for a rigorous college exam helps my students to be better prepared and more confident when they enter college. Several studies have shown that students who successfully complete AP courses while in high school are more likely to perform well in college. Additionally, since many low-income students have to drop out for financial reasons, helping my students earn college credit while in high school helps them to reduce their college costs and increase their chances of staying in college to graduation.
