My Students
A great group of driven scholars have elected to challenge themselves with taking ECN 305 [The Economics of Personal Finance] through Syracuse University Project Advance. These students in our Harlem college preparatory public high school plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.
These students understand that to be truly free, one must be financially independent.
These students are willing to prioritize their education - they realize that education is their key to a better life. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level, they have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.
My Project
Our public high school is proud to partner with Syracuse University through Syracuse University Project Advance - a program whose mission is to offer innovative and challenging Syracuse University courses to qualified high school students at their local high schools, during their regularly scheduled high school day, to increase students’ college readiness by providing college readiness tools, programs, and services. As a certified Syracuse University Adjunct Professor I am honored to introduce ECN 305 - The Economics of Personal Finance - to our students.
This new course offering requires the use of PFIN7 by Billingsley, Gitman and Joehnk as a student textbook; as our school does not have the funding to provide these required tools, I am reaching out to the DonorsChoose community to help me make this opportunity a reality for our deserving students.
Through DonorsChoose, I've already funded the first fourteen textbooks. This funding request is intended to continue to build one full class set. The project has been split up into several smaller requests, as my experience with DonorsChoose has shown me that smaller requests increase the likelihood of funding. This request is Phase III of this bigger project!
Without obtaining these books, we will be unable to offer this class to our students. This would be an incredible wasted opportunity. Please help me to make this happen so that our students can develop into financially astute individuals who understand how to create and manage wealth so that they can realize the American dream through upward socioeconomic mobility.
