My students are hard-workers. They come to my literacy class everyday ready to learn and ready to work.
I teach literacy to students with multiple/severe disabilities.
Not only do they persevere with the content in my class, they also persevere with the limitations their different disabilities may place upon them. They require more processing time after being asked questions. Many have assistive technology for communication, and some have physical disabilities that make it difficult to fully show their knowledge.
Despite these limitations, I am constantly amazed at my students' capacity to learn and grow.
My Project
My students have been working hard all year learning about the different elements of a story. They can define and identify characters, settings and actions. They can retell, they can sequence. They can answer key questions about texts. I could not be more proud of how much they have accomplished this year.
There's only one problem - we read all my books!
We need more books to keep growing our library. More books means more worlds to delve into, more words to understand, more practice at telling stories, more learning and more growth. These books will ensure that we start the next school year ready to go, with a well-stocked library of novel materials.
