This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students cannot wait for Friday afternoons, not because the weekend is near, but because it's time to check out literacy bags for the weekend. Our problem? Our literacy bags are falling apart!

I teach in an urban school in an impoverished neighborhood.

All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and many speak Spanish at home. Very few of my students have access to books at home, so I strive to put as many books as possible in my students' hands and their homes. I can truly say my students love reading, and I want to help them share this enjoyment with their families and loved ones.

My Project

I've maintained a literacy bag program for the past few years, in which students take home a pack of themed books to share with their families. My students LOVE bringing these packs of books home, but after much love and hundreds of students using the packs, the pouches the books are in are falling apart! I would love to be able to replace our current literacy bags with sturdy, new ones. The School-to-Home Organizers I am requesting are water-resistant and will protect the highly coveted books students take home. They are also see-through, which will help entice students to bring home books because they can easily see the covers of the books in each pack. Finally, the durability of these pouches will help students take these packs home for years to come.

Your donation will help support family literacy and encourage parents and students to read together.

This is so critical to improving early childhood literacy and boosting parent-child interactions about books. Thank you so much for your help!
